Last year brought signature moments, beginning with an elegant wedding ceremony on LBI for Ashton & Paul. The birth of our fifth grandchild, a daughter named Tessa, wound out their year. The surprise birthday party for Rich with all his children validated his wish for a big family. I fought for those who could not speak and gained a friend. A friend who earned my respect through his integrity and passion gifted me the “grit and grace” rose proudly planted in our beach house garden. The vision of a rooftop deck to watch the waves dance on the horizon was christened over Memorial Day. Our guests continue to admire the twinkling lights in the backyard that compete with the stars. Ironically a layoff led to a new opportunity and learning the immense impact of slowing down and stepping away. I feel immense gratitude for the blessings in my life.
Without struggle, we would not appreciate the joys. There is a reason the rear-view mirror is smaller, and even today, I grapple with remembering it. The maternal lessons I gave voice to lacked action, and the consequences are now illuminated. I am filled with the desire to fix things before I am no longer able. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference” has returned to my morning ritual. As I heard decades ago at the Presbyterian chapel, I cannot change anyone but myself. This is going to take some work.
Turning forward, I look at the vastness of opportunity ahead of me. It’s exciting, even intimidating, but as Jeff Foxworthy says, “everyone needs some hold your nose and jump moments.” The safety and security that Rich craves bore me to tears. Welcome, 2023, Let’s make some noise.
