Lighten the Grip

Seven years ago, I reluctantly took up the game of golf to appease my husband. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. The lessons of the game continue to weave into my life. During a clinic last week, the pro reminded us that the only thing we can control is the setup. As you walk up to the ball, ask yourself; Where do you want it to go and what can get in the way? Then set your strategy and execute with your eyes on the ball. The ah-ha moment came when he said, “When putting lighten your grip. If you are close to the hole, lighten your grip again.”

I could not help but notice the parallel to leadership. Set your team up for success by providing the goal, encourage them to share obstacles without fearing you will take over, help them to adjust the strategy as needed, and then lighten your grip. Scott Mann says, “We are meaning-seeking, emotional, social creatures,” Suffocating your team by over-managing will stifle, frustrate and demoralize them. No one wins playing this game.

This week try lightening the grip and don’t be surprised when they sink the putt.
