My mother taught me the etiquette of sending a handwritten note. As a child, I remember sitting at the kitchen table, feeling as though I was serving penance for the duty.
Last month I co-hosted the Member-Guest event for our 9 Holer’s golf group. I cut small bouquets of lavender from my garden and made place cards with lavender ink. We wrapped the prizes with lots of tissue and added a champagne cocktail to the menu. The day was a success and compliments flowed.

A week later I opened my mailbox to find a handwritten thank you note from Mary Pat. Instead of quickly scanning and deleting, as I would an email, I walked onto the porch and sat down to read it. Inside I read a few sentences expressing her gratitude for the detail and care we had put into the day. I was almost surprised that someone would make an effort to exercise a nearly obsolete practice. For a few minutes that afternoon, I stopped and enjoyed some quiet time to feel appreciated. Maybe it is time we dust off the stationary and appreciate each other.
