Entering the quagmire

Morning on the trail

“You know before you know, of course. You are bending over the dryer, pulling out the still-warm sheets, and the knowledge walks up to your backbone. You stare at the man you love, and you are staring at nothing; he is gone before he is gone.
“Elizabeth Berg – Open House”

“She wants a divorce. Some Father’s Day present….” My brother’s text lit up my iPhone. She is searching for a different life,  a life without him. He steps into the quagmire of emotion for as long as it will take. I will listen.

Shock, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, and depression. Finally, acceptance and hope will fill his world. I will listen.

She dared to say the words. He will find the strength to hear them. I will listen.
